Woven Bark Basketry
Sunday July 18th
In this workshop you will learn how to make a woven basket with all locally harvested plant materials. Beginning with stakes and weavers made from the inner bark of several tree species including elm, black walnut, and tulip poplar, we will cover twill, regular weave, and twining techniques. Vines, basswood fiber, and cattails will also be integrated into the basket. There will be a focus throughout the day on discussing how to find and process good ‘basket trees’ for inner bark and everything from species to storing the harvested material will be included. Everyone’s basket will be unique, but will measure about 6″ x 6″ x 7″. The finished basket is perfect as a tool basket, but can be used for many other purposes. Join us for a day of meditative weaving and learning with these incredibly special natural materials!
